THEME DEVELOPMENT

BEFORE

AFTER

Our cover at the end of last year looked as shown on the left. We originally had an arrow as an integral part of our design. Emily and I decided that the arrow was too cliche and was not modern or bold like we wanted. We worked at the Herff Jones workshop and MIPA Summer Workshop more on it and started from scratch, creating the final cover on the right.

At the end of last year we were tasked with putting together a theme packet for how we wanted our book's theme to look. We went almost too bold, making the lines too thick and too chaotic. The new and improved front end sheet still has those bold lines but now with a much more slick table of contents and bold, more style friendly colors.

Our mod editor put together the first title page under the direction of Emily and I. Once we took the arrow out, however, we wanted a great picture of our school and to slightly alter the organization of colors in our theme. I did this by making our graphic element black and changing the glitched font on the cover to black rather than white.

The opening was our prized possession in our theme packet. The photo of a student who graduated couldn't be used, of course, so after using the photo to inspire our theme, we walked away from it. We moved up this year to using three spreads for our opening and two for the closing, so the new opening displayed on the right is the third spread in our opening.

Our book is organized chronologically so we need a divider for each month. I wasn't too fond of the dividers from our theme packet so Emily and I worked at MIPA to make a new design. We incorporated our theme in the colors and I am happy to say the new and improved monthly dividers are sleek and modern like we wanted.

I am beyond proud of how our spread design has evolved in just one year. At the end of last year we planned to make spreads less boxy and give our dominant photo a cut-out popping out of the frame. We have done that on every traditional spread. Our all coverage device looks much better than it did in the summer and we have accomplished our goals of covering more students, including at least eight pictures per dominant package, and giving the spreads a less organized, more modern look.
