THIS IS ME

As an attendee of the 2016 MIPA summer workshop, Smith gives a statement to the Broadcast Boot Camp students about being the underdogs in the volleyball tournament. "My friends still make fun of me for this picture but I just really like letting people know what I have to say. I am talkative and I think Broadcast Boot Camp noticed that. The quote makes the story, all journalists know that, and we all know what it's like to be on the receiving end of a bad quote."

Going into high school I had no plans. I didn't know what clubs or sports I'd join or if I would focus all of my time on academics. I was offered a position on the Gladiator Yearbook staff going into my sophomore year. I made the lab my home, I made the staff my family and I found my passion in journalism.

After the first year as a staffer I wanted more. I applied to become the Business Manager in order to perfect my skills and learn how to move faster, more efficiently and lead a small team effectively. I put my all into the dozens of spreads I worked on, the ad section I tackled almost single handedly and grew into the Editor-in-Chief I am today. Between balancing a yearbook with school, a job, and religion, the work portrayed here does not just show what I can do or what I have done. It's more to me, my calling. All of the blood, sweat and tears (oh, the tears) have paid off in the end. This is important to me and it's as simple as that.

Debriefing with two of the design editors, Smith (right) views the proof of an alternative spread from "We Know it's a Lot So Try To Keep Up." As one of two editors, the partnership split up responsibilities and Smith's focus is proofs and managing the page deadlines. "As a staffer or the Business Manager I never really considered all of the planning that goes into meeting deadlines. I always take time to recognize our triumphs, big or small, like the trends spread shown in this picture. I am thrilled with how it came together." View the Trends spread in the DESIGN tab.
